Does History Repeat Itself ?

Welcome

"History Repeats Itself," a phrase that should be familiar to most people as it stands for the repetition of similar events in time. Recently, I was thinking about this phrase, particularly with the current events: the Covid-19 Pandemic, the recession we are currently heading to, and the recent election. Despite these being monumental events during our lifetime, I realized that these were not the first occurrences. I developed a fascination with this topic, so I decided to look at previous U.S. news articles by using the New York Times API. From that, I tried seeing if I could find some trends throughout history and any other discoveries along the way.

About Visualizations

Currently, I have two visualizations under the Visualization tab:

-Top 100 NYT Keywords(1891-2020)

This visualization showcases the top 100 keywords from U.S. news article ranging from 1891 to 2020, which is a clear way to see the most used keywords and the category it is under as well.

-Time Series of NYT Keywords

This visualization illustrates the trend of keywords that are searched by user-input from U.S. news articles ranging from 1891 to 2020. You can see the change in the number of articles that the keyword appeared in as the year progresses. So test your luck and see if you can find any trend in keywords during some years or see how language changes the preference of using one keyword to another instead.

What's up next?

The project is continuing! Currently, I have three new versions in the roadmap for my current visualization. Some new features include autocomplete for the time series visualization, which allows for better searching for keywords and knowing what keywords do or do not exist. I also have plans for new visualization to add as well to the site as well. So, look forward to these upcoming updates to come!
